Sebastopol Walks has run on volunteers since 2008. We're building a proper team, so that no single person is the reason a walk does or doesn't happen.

What we need

The roles

Morning of a walk

Host

Arrive at 8:45. Welcome walkers, hand out name tags, get the waiver and sign-in sheet round the group, then give the opening remarks — parking, restrooms, distance, next month's walk — and hand over to the leader. You read from a script. You do not need to know anything about the walk itself.

Sweep

Walk at the back of the group the whole way. Keep an eye on stragglers, carry the first aid kit, know who has told you they're leaving early. The one rule: nobody gets left behind. You need to be comfortable walking the full route, usually two to three miles.

Ongoing, a few hours a month

Walk Coordinator

Work with each guest leader in the weeks before their walk to collect the route, distance, terrain, restrooms, and where it ends — so the listing is accurate and the host and sweep know what they're walking into. Mostly email and a form.

Communications

Write the Eventbrite listing and the monthly email, keep the website current, take a few photographs. If you like writing, this is the one.

Know something about Sebastopol worth three hours of a Saturday? Lead a walk. Choose a route within reach of the Plaza and talk about what you love. We handle registration, promotion, sign-in and safety — you bring the subject.

What we actually ask of you

Most volunteers take two or three walks across the ten-walk season.
You claim the dates that suit you — nobody is assigned.
A walk morning runs from 8:45 to about noon.
Your first walk is shadowing someone experienced, not going it alone.
Plans change. Tell us more than a week ahead and we'll fill the slot, no awkwardness.

Roughly how many walks a year could you help with?

Are you comfortable walking the full route? Host and sweep both walk the whole way — usually two to three miles at an easy pace, with some hills.

Do you have current first aid or CPR training? Useful for the sweep role, but not required — most of our sweeps don't.
